The highest blood sugar level that Devin's meter can measure is 599. The measurement beyond that comes up in the letters HIGH. Devin had a HIGH that persisted for over two hours despite getting bolused for it. Patient, due to excellent training by The Joslin Center, we waited and charted the changes in insulin bolused and times and results of both glucose tests and ketone tests while gathering the cell phone to call Joslin for further instructions. Devin did not appear to be in distress from the HIGH and cooperated with pushing water to help reduce the blood sugar level. Just as I was about to get my coat etc to take Devin to the Emergency Room, his blood sugar started to come down. We all breathed a sigh of relief.
So the lessons learned are: avoid stress by not having these ex-friends visit at the same time (since they refuse to get along)
and avoid stress overeating
and remember to bolus appropriately EVERY time!
